School's out forever (17/07/07)
We made the most of our last day at school and our last day as Franche First with a special lunch, classroom parties and 'free' swirly-ice-creams, care of local businessman and dad, David Murdoch.
Headteacher, Mrs Weddell-Hall, said: "We are indebted to all our pupils, parents and staff for making this, our last day as Franche First, such a happy and wonderful day.
"We are very grateful to Mr Murdoch and his family for all their ongoing help and support and today's free ice-cream give-away has been a huge hit with children and staff alike!"
A day of preparation and a full day of free ice-cream sales began early as children arrived for morning lessons. Said Mr Murdoch: "We usually sell ice-creams at the school's summer fair to help raise funds, but this year due to the wet weather it had to be cancelled, so instead we decided to give it away to celebrate the last day of term.
"All in all, by the end of today we will have given away over 600 chocolate flake ice-creams and hopefully brought a little bit of summer to everyone. "

Ex-Franche pupil, David Murdoch, remembers with great fondness his own Franche schooldays, with numerous members of the Murdoch family still attending the school today. "The irony is that if the fair had gone ahead as planned I wouldn't have been able to attend as my hotel, The Red Lion and my office premises were amongst the many businesses affected by the recent fire in Coventry Street.
"Being here with the children today has brought us all much needed light relief."
Safari magic (11/07/07)

Lions, tigers and giraffes were all on the safari park trail for year two pupils when they visited the West Midlands Safari Park as one of their lasts trips of the school year.
Head of year 2, Mrs Wilding, said: "The children had a fantastic time and really enjoyed getting 'up-close' to the animals. The African wild dogs were a particular favourite, as were the white lions!"
After all the wet weather, the children were delighted to see the animals out and about and enjoying a dry day. Said Mrs Wilding: "The children have talked none-stop about their trip and especially the Sea Lion Theatre and the naughty sea lion!"
Once back in the classroom as part of their life curriculum studies, the pupils used the trip to create animal pictures, stories and pretended to be the lions they saw at the safari park.
Parents react to uniform change (09/07/07)
Franche parents were treated to a personal fashion show as pupils took to the catwalk to show off the look, style and practicalities of the new Franche Community Primary School uniform for this coming September.

Headteacher, Mrs Weddell-Hall, said: "Parents and children have been absolutely wonderful over the many months that the design has taken to perfect, offering opinions and helping to create our fantastic new school uniform.

"From the original concept the whole school community has been involved in developing the design, to the finished range that we have today."
The uniform showcase provided parents with the opportunity of viewing the new school wear in all its guises.
Speaking with the catwalk models of the future, the children all agreed they liked the uniform, but the best bit was modelling and showing it off to their parents.
Author tells tales (06/07/07)
Three days of tales and stories, captivated young minds when visiting author, Professor Barrie Wade, joined our pupils for a series of story telling and young writer's workshops.
Year 4 teacher, Sam Page, said: "Professor Wade joined us for morning assembly, sharing and creating imaginative circle stories, before holding a series of writer's workshops."
Story telling with reception class youngsters and conducting writer's workshops with pupils from years 1 to 5, published author, Professor Wade, proved a huge hit with children and teachers alike. Raising money for Professor Wade's chosen charity, MENCAP, the children all took part in a sponsored Spellathon, with the aim to learn as many spellings as they could."
Headteacher, Mrs Weddell-Hall, said: "Unlocking a child's literary imagination at an early age is crucial in every aspect of education and life learning situations. We are so grateful to Professor Wade for donating so much of his time and what a fantastic way to create a desire to learn spellings."
Winners announced for foster care art designs (05/07/07)
Pupils enjoyed a visit from County Councillor, Mrs Fran Oborski, who joined our school assembly to present winners of the Foster Care Fortnight artwork competition with their prizes.
The County Council's fostering service staff judged the finished pictures of foster carer, Jackie Wooldridge. Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "We are delighted to welcome Councillor Oborski and members of the fostering service to our school. Opening up discussion through this type of interactive activity introduces children to fostering and the vital role it plays providing children within our community with support and a loving environment in which they can continue to grow and develop."
This year's Foster Care Fortnight theme focused on, Faces of Foster Care and sought to highlight existing foster carers and their personal stories, reflecting the range and diversity of carers and their life in general.
County Councillor, Mrs Fran Oborski, said: "As chairman of the County Council Corporate Parenting Board it's an absolute pleasure to be here at Franche. It's so fantastic that the school cares enough to make sure young children are aware of foster care and we are really lucky to have such wonderful foster carers such as Jackie."
All winners have been invited to join the celebrations at a private viewing of their art on either Monday or Tuesday, 16th and 17th July at the Worcester Arts Workshop Café, with all participating children receiving a goody bag and certificate for taking part.
Evacuation experience at Franche (03/07/07)

Joining the swelling ranks of school children experiencing life as World War Two refugees, pupils packed their bags and headed off with their teachers to find out, first hand, just how children from across the country were evacuated during the war.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "The children had a wonderful time and learnt so much about the war and what people had to endure."
Every year children from schools from across the area take part in living history trips and enjoy 'hands on' sessions to support their classroom learning.
Said Mrs Weddell-Hall: "The trip was a great success and the children are now using their 'mock' evacuation experience to assist with their classroom history studies."

We will be holding our celebration summer fair on Sunday 1st July from 1pm onwards, with special guest, Kidderminster Harriers player and Wembley finalist, Gavin Hurran.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "This year is very special as it will be our last as a first school before becoming a primary school this coming September. It will be an emotional 'farewell' to Franche First, but the educational, personal and group opportunities this transformation will provide will have a direct and positive impact on our growing school community."
Attractions include; arena displays, bouncy castle, bar, BBQ and hot pork rolls, strawberries and cream, basketball, panning for gold, face paining, balloon animals, football and lots, lots more.
Hunt for buried treasure in the forest or chill out in the school's purpose built tree house, whatever you decide to do, the event promises a whole host of family fun.
Said Mrs Weddell-Hall: "As the children and staff embark upon a new phase of Franche teaching, learning and achievement, this year's summer fair will be a great opportunity to celebrate the old and look forward to the new. Come and join us, meet old friends and make new ones too. It's going to be absolutely wonderful."
Do you remember the 70's (20/06/07)

Franche youngsters enjoyed delving into 70's music and Elvis memorabilia, all thanks to Hartlebury Museum's 'Museum on the Move' tour bus, as part of their history studies.
The interactive, multi-sensory exhibition, sponsored by the county council and Hartlebury Museum, is the celebration of the life, music and the influences that created the world we live in today. Everything from Elvis Presley to Beano annuals enjoying the spotlight.
Year four teacher, Karen Crawford, said: "This type of 'hands on' sensory learning experience encourages children to explore human history and popular culture outside of the classroom. Listening to music icons such as Elvis Presley, ABBA, David Cassidy and the ever popular Muppet Show had their curiosity in a total spin."
In groups, the children all aged between 10 and 11 years, thumbed through copious music albums, newspapers and dressed up, donning 70's platform boots and vintage psychedelic glasses, made popular by John Lennon and Elton John.
Headteacher, Mrs Weddell-Hall, said: "What a fantastic experience for the children, being able to totally immerse themselves in our cultural history. They were astonished when they realised that today's fashion was originally worn by not just their parents, but their grandparents too!"
Father's Day Splash (13/06/07)

Enjoying a dip this Father's day will be Franche parent, Mrs Sarah Edwards, when she takes to the water to raise funds for the school with sponsorship support from her colleagues at Sainsbury's Kidderminster store and the Sainsbury's Local Heroes Scheme.
Parent and Sainsbury's employee, Mrs Edwards said: "I wanted to help raise funds for the school and I thought this would be a good way to do just that. Get fit and help a great school.
"The intention is for me to swim 50 lengths in 60 minutes and so far I have raised over £220, thanks to the support of The Round Head public house and my friends and colleagues at Sainsbury's. The money raised from the sponsored swim will help purchase new books for the Parent's Association's new book scheme."
'Local Heroes' is Sainsbury's scheme to recognise and reward the contribution their staff make to charities and activities in the local community. The scheme offers matched funding for charity and, when Sainsbury's employees volunteer their time, they can also apply for an award of £200 for their chosen charity or group.
Juliet Fox, Sainsbury's spokeswoman, said: "We are really proud that Sarah has chosen to help fund raise with the support from the local hero's award for her chosen charity. We wish her all the best of luck for the swimming event."
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "Isn't she marvellous. The support we receive from our parents never ceases to amaze us. We are so grateful to Mrs Edwards and to Sainsbury's for all their help and support. It is very much appreciated."
1st Anniversary (04/06/07)

Franche pupils were delighted to receive an RSPB certificate in recognition of their efforts in helping count birds for this year's national RSPB's Big Schools' Birdwatch 2007. (22nd January to 2nd February)
Our young ornithologists, ranging in ages from 18 months to 10 years, observed visiting birds to the school's grounds over a two week period. Forest School Assistant and event organiser, Mrs Bendall, said: "The RSPB annual birdwatch is the biggest global birdwatching survey undertaken. As part of their forest school curriculum lessons the children were organised into small groups to record information, before entering their results online via the RSPB's own website."
Literally thousands of schools from across the UK took part, revealing our top feathered visitor to be the starling. Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "Feedback from this curricular activity was extremely positive and for the children to receive a certificate for their efforts is tremendous. A simple idea that captures a child's attention, imagination and most of all their enthusiasm.
"Ensuring the youngest of children feel connected to the natural world is the first step in engaging their young minds in the wider environmental discussion."

Franche Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "We can't believe that it's been a whole year since we launched the school's very own walking-bus.
"Children, parents and our teaching staff have seen the difference the Walking-Bus has made to traffic, road congestion and the general well-being of our children who have happy smiling faces when they reach the school gates, whatever the weather. The project has been a great success and continues to grow in numbers thanks to the willingness of our wonderful parents who organise and operate this fantastic school service. Thank you!"
This year around 2 million school pupils will be taking part in a range of activities and events right across the UK and now in its 11th year, Walk to School week is a celebration of how walking to school can reduce air pollution and help save the planet.

Children Stopped in Tracks (19/05/07)
Pupils and staff stopped and stood mesmerised, as they watched images from school trips and read the latest news via a new information system, which is part of the school's first phase of tangible change from a first school to a primary school.
The screen, which is the first of two 42" TFT screens planned for the new primary school, are designed to provide parents and pupils with up to date information and is continuously streamed on to the large screens throughout the school day. Commenting on the new system, Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "Isn't it fantastic? Franche is delighted to be one of the first schools in the area to take up and use this new technological initiative. It's already making a noticeable impact on our children, their parents, our staff and our many school visitors."
Communication between main school buildings, interactive learning and the ability to display more than one media stream direct from news stations on the screen at the same time are just a few of the benefits of the system. Key messages tailored to differing audiences, Franche Children's Centre activities and courses will also benefit from this new technology, as the system is able to take account of the many school activities and programmes operating daily.
Said Mrs Weddell-Hall: "When we open as a much larger primary school in September it will be vital we communicate and disseminate information to all areas of the school campus. The ability to utilise live content with a dynamic display will aid learning, create effective communication and help shape and be inclusive of all extended school services and extra curricular programmes in one vibrant and creative primary school community."
Kinetic Science (12/05/07)
Pupils took an active roll in science thanks to a visit by touring theatre-in-education company, the Kinetic Theatre as part of their science curriculum studies.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "Supplementing science teaching in a fun and dramatic setting brings science alive for the children and demonstrates the subject in a dynamic, interactive and practical way."
The Kinetic Theatre Company is a professional theatre-in-education company touring musical plays geared to the National Curriculum for Science to Primary schools and theatres throughout the UK. Our schools are tasked with the responsibility of providing a broad and balanced curriculum for all pupils, with the National Curriculum as the starting point for planning a varied programme that meets specific needs of individuals and groups of pupils.
Said Mrs Weddell-Hall: "Providing effective learning opportunities for all our pupils is vitally important. Allowing teaching staff to modify and be creative with the National Curriculum provides our pupils with relevant and appropriately challenging work at each key stage."
The children thoroughly enjoyed watching the play and taking part in the many experiments and group participation sessions designed to stimulate their learning, be inclusive of children of all abilities and provide support to science teaching within the classroom.

Over 70 pupils and staff from our school, set-off with bags bulging, on an adventure weekend of personal challenges and activities as part of their life skills curriculum studies.
An annual event, Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said of the children's trip: "They all look forward to this trip so much it's a delight to see.
"For weeks before they do nothing but talk about what they are going to do and how long is it until we go Mrs Hall?"
The Year 4 trip to Boreatton Park has operated for a number of years and is seen always seen as the last big trip before the children move on to their new middle schools. From this September 2007, 45 schools from across the Wyre Forest will close, replacing the existing three-tier school structure of First, Middle and High Schools, to be replaced by a new two-tier school structure.
Commenting on the changes, Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "We are all naturally sad as we come to the end of this education era. We are however extremely keen and excited at the many new education prospects awaiting both children and teaching staff. New challenges, opportunities, enhanced facilities in all areas will mean our children will have the best possible educational start these changes now bring.

Pupils enjoyed an exotic visit by creatures such as a bearded lizard, an owl, a sleek and an extremely friendly Bengal leopard cat and a python!
The children's annual organized animal experience is deigned to enhance their awareness of the many different creatures found around the world and the UK. Every child had the opportunity to hold and stroke the animals during their wildlife talk and discussion on habitats.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "Allowing children the opportunity to see, touch, question and get-up-close and personal with wild animals, in a controlled environment, is an incredible asset to curriculum learning and children's understanding of the natural world.
"By unlocking the reality of nature and the lifecycle of wild animals in this way, we are able to enrich, excite and stimulate our pupil's personalised learning experience, which in turn aids their overall education and life experiences."
The children's animal visit was organised as part of their world curriculum studies.

Fairtrade Easter Eggstravaganza (04/04/07)
Franche children ended a fun packed 'Fairtrade' spring term with a number of Easter celebration activities including a sponsored Easter bounce, paint the Easter egg competition and a school Easter Fair.
Easter is the Christian festival celebrating the life, death and resurrection of God's son Jesus and it is the most important religious event in the Christian calendar, observed between late March and late April. Easter day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, three days after his death by crucifixion on the cross.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "This term has been extremely busy, with children also learning about Fairtrade issues and the difference they can make to people from developing countries by purchasing Fairtrade products."
To help promote Fairtrade fortnight, pupils began by taking part in a competition to design a poster to encourage people to buy Fairtrade products. The event, organized by local supermarket Franche Co-op, was launched at a school assembly, with the children's winning posters displayed within the Franche store.
Said Mrs Weddell-Hall: "The children took the Fairtrade message to heart with poster designs demonstrating their understanding of the real issues involved.
"Their designs were stunning and the winners received a selection of Fairtrade products and of course, a Fairtrade chocolate Easter egg."
Completing the school's eventful programme Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "This project has helped raise everyone's understanding of Fairtrade issues and the availably of these products within our shops. From coffee, tea and orange juice, to cotton products, footballs and of course everyone's Easter favourite chocolate Easter eggs. We are indebted to our local Franche Co-op who continues to be extremely supportive of all school activities.
"Allowing children to experience learning in an active and stimulating way aids their long-term learning. Celebrating Easter and supporting Fairtrade in this way we felt was a natural link to make."
Fairtrade fortnight ran from 26th February to the 11th March.
Early Music Matters (27/03/07)
Children enjoyed exploring and taking part in music as part of a workshop funded by the Early Years and Childcare Services.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "The Early Years department and our TOTS group enjoyed the music workshop immensely. Lots of smiles, giggles and creative participation from the children, showed just how much they all enjoyed it."
The workshop, organized and run by Craig Trafford from Early Ears Music, used a range of sound games, sensory activities, rhyme and instrument play to aide and support progression of the children's language skills, social development and also their learning and listening intelligence.
Said Mrs Weddell-Hall: "The children were very fortunate to be able to participate in this activity. The workshop provided an excellent mix of creative, stimulating and fun music based learning sessions. We are extremely grateful for the funding from Worcestershire's Early Years and Childcare Service as it allows us to use Craig's workshops which are just wonderful."
Designed to encourage children and grown-ups to come together in an atmosphere of fun and exploration, the workshops develop confidence, competence and provide an open arena to enjoy music from an early age.
"The importance of interactive music sessions with children can reap immense benefits." said Mrs Weddell-Hall, "I would recommend all early years providers to take advantage of this type of musical workshop."
Baby Massage (19/03/07)
The introduction of baby massage to the Children's Centre has proved a hit with enquiries and session bookings increasing daily.
Centre Coordinator Pam said: "The introduction of our new baby massage classes has been a received well by our families. Sessions utilise a range of stimuli from basic baby massage techniques to baby signing and the use of rhyme to encourage early use of language."

Massage known to sooth and reduce tension, in addition relieves restlessness and promotes relaxation, inducing a deeper and longer sleep. It also aides with the digestion of food and encourages early development of muscular coordination and joint flexibility.
Said Pam: "From a child's earliest days the tiniest touch matters, as it ignites baby's reaction, stimulating a positive response that results with interaction between baby and parent to increase parent child bonding."
Proving successful, baby massage is destined to become a staple programme at the Children's Centre. Future plans also include the introduction of a new baby group venture, designed specifically for pre-walkers.

Parent's attending the Children's Centre, have been taking part in 3 part introductory sign language course.
Centre Coordinator, Pam Dunstone said: "The course is aimed at mums and dads and extended family members to help them learn the basics of signing, to allow them greater interaction with their children from an early age.
"The course has proved very popular, with requests for additional courses and follow-up classes, which we are now looking at and hope to run later in the year."
Published figures suggest around 90-95% of deaf children have hearing parents, and among these children their introduction to signing varies greatly. Said Pam: "Early interaction using sign language opens up communication opportunities for both parent and child. Signing matters as it stimulates learning and we hope that this introductory course will encourage other parents to get involved."

From the youngest to the oldest everyone who wanted to tried a pancake at a special assembly, with the younger children in the school's nursery 'Wraparound' class enjoying a special pancake session in between playing and other very important fun activities.
Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, as it is the last day before the Christian period of Lent, a time of abstinence, of giving things up with Shrove Tuesday being the last chance to indulge and to use up foods that aren't allowed during Lent. Pancakes are traditionally eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs, which were forbidden during the period of Lent.

Young Twitchers (18/01/07)
Franche pupils are training to be twitchers of the future, as they begin to observe the many birds visiting the school grounds in readiness for this year's RSPB's national Big Schools' Birdwatch 2007, which begins on Monday 22nd January and runs until Friday 2nd February.
Forest School Assistant and event organiser Mrs Bendall said: "The RSPB birdwatch is the biggest annual global birdwatching survey undertaken. Franche pupils will be organised into small groups to record information, before entering their results on online via the RSPB's website.
"Children from the age of 3 to 10 years will be involved as part of their forest school curriculum lessons."
Last year, over 30,000 school children from across the UK took part. The Big Schools' Birdwatch has grown steadily over the past five years, and is part of the world's biggest bird watching event; the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch. The Big Schools' Birdwatch encourages children to take part while they're at school.
Headteacher Mrs Weddell-Hall said: "Feedback from the children, their families and our teaching staff for this curricular activity has been extremely positive. What a simply wonderful idea, one which captures the children's interest, imagination and most of all their enthusiasm."
This year's Birdwatch 2007 is set to grow even bigger amid rising awareness in education of the importance of the outside world, taking care of the local environment, wildlife and ensuring children feel connected to the natural world to create a personal interest in their own health and well-being.
